Title: What do we learn from the giant monopole resonance measurements at Texas A&M university

Speaker: Dr. Yiu-Wing Lui, Cyclotron Institute, Texas A&M University

Abstract:

The isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) is of interest because it’s energy EGMR can be related to the compressibility of nuclear matter KNM. We have studied the systematic (more than 30 nuclei between 12C and 208Pb) of ISGMR through inelastic scattering of 240 MeV α particles from the K500 superconducting cyclotron at Texas A&M University. Experimental setup and data analysis will be briefly discussed. KNM extracted from experimental measurements will be compared to theoretical values. Can we set some constraint on the value of Kτ from the GMR measurements? Finally, some anomalies from these measurements and their implication to the nuclear matter compressibility will be discussed.
